What is Coaching?

The word coaching is like music to my ears. As a matter of fact, I’ve been coaching since I was 18 years old. When I was younger, I coached badminton at my high school for 3-4 years and absolutely loved being in a leadership role and guiding my students to become better badminton players.

I also was a piano teacher for 4 years as a side hustle while I was studying full time interior design in university. Needless to say, I’ve always been someone who loves to help inspire people to see their greater potential and I’m guessing that if you’re reading this, you are similar.

Today I wanted to dive into what coaching is. A lot of people working in a 9-5 want to start an online business as a side hustle but have no idea what type of business to start and I always recommend starting a coaching business. 

Why? Simply put, you can leverage the natural gifts, talents and skills you have to help someone go through a transformation (hint hint: your ideal customer is usually a former version of yourself). What better way than to start a business to give back to this world and to make massive impact and income? 

Now I know that there’s many modalities within the coaching/consulting/teaching space so before we dive deeper into coaching specifically, I wanted to share some quick definitions. 

Coaching – Helps your clients see their own potential and guiding them through a transformation

Consulting – Providing answers for clients to implement things to overcome their current challenges

Therapist – Working with past life occasions/fears and helping someone get unstuck, typically in the form of mindset work 



Coaching is powerful and extremely rewarding. One of the biggest differences between coaching and the other modalities is that you are guiding your client in the right direction and allowing your client to find their own answers by seeing their own potential. Simply put, you don’t give them the answer nor do you hand hold them. 

It allows you to go deeper than just the surface level and helps you to inspire a behavioural change for your clients and to hold space for them when they are going through such a big transformation. Coaches give their clients exactly what they need to feel challenged to push them in the right direction and for them to find and discover the answers themselves. Coaches are not afraid to call their clients out on their BS when they’re playing small. 

I think typically there’s a huge misconception on the difference between coaching and teaching and it’s definitely something I caught myself doing when I first started my business too. If your clients wanted to learn something, they could easily Youtube or Google it to find the answer. Where coaching comes in is that you help your client to focus on particular goals but what you guide them through also can be implemented into other areas of their life. From my personal experience, it has been a life changing experience.

The most beautiful part about coaching is to create a bond and lasting relationship with your clients. I’ll be frank. Sometimes we talk about deep shit and dive into mindset and limiting beliefs. This is why coaching is so powerful though. You’re able to create such an amazing bond and everlasting connection with your client and to be part of the transformation that they are going through.

I could probably write pages upon pages raving about the coaching but I wanted to keep this one short and sweet. Why? Because it’s honestly better for you to experience being coached or coaching someone else to fully understand the power of this industry!
